Fuel Alcohol Fermentation
Distillation is often done in a two-step process. First one propagates up the yeast in a propagation tank. Then this slurry is transferred to a much larger batch of mash, where it is used as yeast. This gives a great savings in yeast cost.
Temperature Tolerant Turbo yeast is excellent for this application, providing the following benefits:
Ferments sugar, corn, molasses, barley, wheat and similar
High osmo tolerance, stands 28% sugar or equivalent
High temperature tolerance, 40°C for 14%
High alcohol tolerance, easily ferments to 16-17% in 38°C
Faster fermentation, increased production
Purer fermentation, 1% less fusel replaced by pure alcohol
More information
The fermentation in the first (propagation) tank is made using Temperature Tolerant Turbo Yeast. Then it is transferred to the next fermentor with many times more of the same mash.
What makes the Turbo yeast cells grow so strong is the added micro nutrients. You can also get your current yeast strain to perform better by adding our micro nutrients.
If you re use yeast the difference is even larger. By using micro nutrients in pre fermentation the yeast cells grow to be extremely strong and healthy. There fore, the yeast perform better in fermentor, giving a better fermentation that complete to dryness. On top of this, it often happen that one get 0.2-0.8% stronger mash because yeast is strong enough to ferment to lower dryness.
Killing Temperature information
The recommended fermentation temperature (for 16-17% alcohol) with good cooling/temperature control is 30°C. With very good (that never exceeds 38°C) temperature control, fermentation can be made in 35-38°C (test for optimum performance). In alcohol plants -- where all alcohol that leaves with the carbon dioxide is trapped -- such high fermentation temperature does not result in a lower yield.
Typical for a corn mash plant is to start with thickest possible mash, 31% solids, in propagation at 35°C/95F. Then the propagation is transferred to 31% solids mash that holds 35-38°C temperature.
The yeast always produces 16-17% alcohol. You are always sure it works. We are aware that some distilleries test the limits and produce 18%. But in such cases you are on the edge, and are doing this at your own risk. 16-17% always works and our recommendation is to stay there.
